Diana’s absence pervades event

ELTON John was last at Westminster Abbey 14 years ago when he sang the haunting “Candle in the Wind” at the funeral of his friend Princess Diana.

Tomorrow, the British singer will be back as a guest at the wedding of her elder son Prince William, a happier occasion at which his mother’s absence will nonetheless be keenly felt.

More than 1 million people lined the route of Diana’s cortege in 1997 to pay their respects to a woman who was a royal outcast by the time of her death aged 36 in a Paris car crash but a hugely popular figure with the public.

For many, the abiding memory of William is still as a 15-year-old boy, head bowed,The last time she went somewhere I handed her one of my normal cute laptop bags to carry the netbook in and she handed it back and said it wasn’t cute enough. following his mother’s coffin through the packed streets of London watched by hundreds of millions more people around the world.

“The last time we were in Westminster Abbey, my heart sank when I saw those two boys walking behind the coffin,” Elton said, referring to William and his younger brother Harry.

“I can’t imagine at that young age having to walk in public following your mother’s coffin,” he added in an interview with American television host Barbara Walters. La Martina T-shirt

“And the next time we are in the Abbey it’s to see him walking up the aisle with a beautiful woman and the love of his life,” said Elton, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth for services to music and charity, adding: “I think it’s the most joyous result and I’m sure Diana would be very, very happy about it.”

Media executives say the “Diana connection” is one reason why the public appetite for coverage of the wedding, particularly in the United States where she had an army of admirers, is so strong.

Elton John’s “Candle in the Wind 1997″ became the best-selling single worldwide since charts began with 33 million copies sold.

Royal observers say William has made a point of keeping his mother’s memory alive as Britain gears up for the biggest royal occasion since the Queen Mother’s death in 2002.

Last year, William, 28, presented his 29-year-old fiancee with his mother’s dazzling sapphire engagement ring and the couple reportedly visited Diana’s grave at Althorp Estate,Safely transport your 17 inch laptop bag in any briefcase, messenger bag or backpack. home of her family in central England, ahead of the big day.

An international media village has sprung up to provide coverage of the royal wedding and a British minister has said the global TV audience could reach 2 billion people.

“Princess Diana was the biggest celebrity in the world and her son’s wedding is an extension of that,” said Linda Bell Blue, executive producer for entertainment news show “Entertainment Tonight.”

UN human rights panel starts abuse probe in Libya

A three-member international panel arrived in Libya Wednesday to begin a United Nations-ordered inquiry into the violence and human rights abuses in Libya since forces supporting Muammar al-Gaddafi began a crackdown against protesters earlier this year.

The team, led by Professor Cherif Bassiouni, an Egyptian jurist and war crimes expert who has previously served as a UN rapporteur, was dispatched by the Human Rights Council and will present its findings to the Geneva-based body in June.

The other panel members are Asma Khader, a Jordanian-Palestinian lawyer who serves on the executive committee of the International Commission of Jurists,,air Jordans, and Canada’s Philippe Kirsch, who was the first president of the International Criminal Court.

The inquiry was ordered after reports emerged of serious human rights abuses against civilians in Libya, where initially peaceful protests have transformed into open conflict between opposition groups and the Qadhafi regime.

The General Assembly suspended Libya’s membership in the Human Rights Council last month in the wake of the violent repression of the protesters, and the Security Council later authorized Member States to take “all necessary measures” to protect civilians.

Low-carbon town planned near Disney

THE Pudong New Area plans to build a low-carbon town near the future Shanghai Disneyland site in the next five years to attract tourists and better support the soon-to-be world’s largest amusement park, a post-World-Expo plan revealed yesterday.

The new town, designed with a countryside flavor, will cover an area of 4.6 square kilometers around Shanghai Disneyland,The small loan came as a relief to the poor villagers who spent the money to finance funerals, buy stationery for children, genuine ugg boots, and will be able to accommodate 100,000 people after completion, said the designer, Zero Carbon System, which built and operated the London Zero Carbon Case Pavilion at the World Expo last year.

Total investment in the country’s first low-carbon town will reach 8.6 billion yuan (US$1.,air Jordans,32 billion) and the project is expected to be completed in 2016, officials said.

The designer said most energy used in the new town will be from solar, wind and biomass sources. Meanwhile, water source heat pumps from the Huangpu River will cool residential buildings, commercial centers and other public facilities in the summer.

“The town will definitely achieve a higher return in the future,,Metallic Classic Short 5842,” Chen Shuo, CEO of Zero Carbon System, said in a news briefing yesterday.

EU, IMF say Ireland has passed 1st bailout test

EU, IMF say Ireland has passed 1st bailout test

Ireland is pursuing an aggressive plan to bolster its banks, slash its deficits and pull the Irish out of one of the world’s worst financial crises, international experts declared Friday as they approved the next phase of Ireland’s global bailout.

Negotiators from the European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund said Ireland can receive the next euro4.5 billion ($6.48 billion dollars) in the credit line it negotiated in November. And they authorized Ireland to pump euro24 billion into its debt-struck banks by the end of July in a dramatic bid to make them crisis-proof and spur investors to resume normal lending.

IMF executive Ajai Chopra,CHI Camo Green who oversaw November’s deal for a potential euro67.5 billion ($98 billion) credit line for Ireland, said all the experts ¡ª who spent the past week testing whether Ireland was meeting its end of the bargain ¡ª said the month-old government of Prime Minister Enda Kenny was moving decisively to restore investor confidence in its banks.

Chopra said the new government was “moving forward on banking reform in a very resolute way. Ireland is emerging from one of the deepest crises ever,CHI Turbo 1′ but the way forward is clear.”

He, European Central Bank official Klaus Masuch and Istvan Szekely, director general of economic and financial affairs at the European Commission, agreed at a joint press conference that Ireland’s published March 31 stress tests on four Dublin banks were rigorous in setting euro24 billion as the new upper limit to guarantee their solvency. Ireland has already injected euro46 billion into its banks, a burden that wrecked the nation’s credit rating and forced it to negotiate November’s rescue loans.

Chopra said Kenny’s government, elected Feb. 25 and formed March 9, has “moved very quickly after taking office in devising a strategy based on the stress tests. … In our view Ireland has a clear plan and progress is being made.”

Masuch rejected criticisms that other European countries, and the Frankfurt-based ECB in particular, were forcing Ireland’s taxpayers to cover bank losses that should be borne instead by senior bondholders. Those investors ¡ª chiefly British, German and American banks ¡ª are being repaid in full.

“In our view burden-sharing on the senior bondholders would have been risky for Ireland. It would have undermined confidence in the Irish banking sector. You have just achieved a major boost in confidence,” he said, referring to investors’ mildly positive response to the latest Irish stress tests.

Masuch added that the European Central Bank was directly providing or underwriting more than euro130 billion in short-term loans “at very low rates” to Irish banks, aid that enables them to stay open and dispense money to customers.

“These loans are not available on the market,” he said.

As part of the past week’s haggling, the financiers did offer concessions sought by Kenny’s government to reverse elements of the November package. They pledged backing for an ill-defined program to create jobs ¡ª desperately needed in a nation with a 14.6 percent unemployment rate, second-highest in the 27-nation EU.

Finance Minister Michael Noonan said the jobs plan would be unveiled in May and would be “revenue neutral” ¡ª meaning it won’t increase the deficit. He declined to say how much the program would cost or where compensating cuts would occur.

The European and IMF officials also accepted the government’s demand to restore Ireland’s unusually high minimum wage. This will take the hourly rate back up to euro8.65 ($12.55), second-highest in Europe next to Luxembourg, following the previous government’s decision to cut it by euro1 ($1.45) to euro7.65 ($11.10). The move affects about 60,000 members of Ireland’s 1.8 million workers.

Ireland simultaneously will cut in half the tax it makes employers pay for each employee earning minimum wage. That measure was designed to ensure that the pay raise won’t raise business costs. Again, Noonan declined to say how Ireland would compensate for the reduced tax take.

The bailout negotiators downplayed an apparent divergence in the economic forecasts used in November’s bailout deal versus worse figures now being forecast for Ireland.

While the agreement five months ago anticipated 2011 growth of 0.9 percent and a deficit of 9.4 percent, the IMF this week said growth of 0.5 percent and a deficit of 10.5 percent was now probable.

“The data are volatile.Christian Louboutin shoes china These (two) forecasts are actually quite close, so I would not read too much into the difference,” Chopra said.

Economists sounded more skeptical about Irish plans to raise the minimum wage and lower employers’ tax burden on those workers ¡ª while simultaneously meeting the EU-IMF goal of reducing the deficit to 3 percent of Ireland’s gross domestic product by 2015.

“The Irish government hasn’t explained where that money’s going to come from,” said Gregory Connor, finance professor at the National University of Ireland at Maynooth. He said the lower tax on minimum-wage workers means “there has to be a spending decline or tax increase somewhere else.”

Connor said few expect Ireland to achieve the goal of reducing its deficit to 3 percent by 2015 ¡ª but the country was succeeding in showing that it’s doing its best.

“Most economists and the troika (EU, ECB and IMF) members as well as the Irish government agree that goal is not really feasible. The IMF is forecasting it that won’t even happen by 2016, but the attempt is important,” he said.

Before the latest European and IMF reassurances on Ireland, one of the big three credit-rating agencies cut its grade on Ireland citing the risk of lower-than-expected growth, higher unemployment and future banking shocks.

Moody’s dropped Ireland two notches to Baa3, one grade above junk-bond status ¡ª and kept the country on a negative watch for a potential further downgrade.

The other two agencies are less pessimistic.

Fitch on Thursday said it was keeping Ireland’s score at BBB-plus, three grades above junk,Anime importerschi flat irons with a negative outlook.

Standard & Poor’s on April 1 downgraded Ireland one notch to BBB-plus but raised its outlook to stable. S&P argued that Ireland’s strong export sector means it is better placed to rebound than Greece, the first eurozone member to take a bailout, and Portugal, which is currently negotiating one.

Egypt adjourns trial of former interior minister

A court adjourned Tuesday the trial of Egypt’s former interior minister on charges of killing anti-government protesters, delaying the verdict in a case seen as a test for the country’s ruling generals.
Many Egyptians are closely watching the fate of Habib el-Adli, one of the most hated members of the administration of deposed President Hosni Mubarak, because of the brutality of his police force.

Adli and six other senior officers are charged with killing pro-democracy protesters during the uprising.

He is one of the most senior Mubarak-era ministers to be put on trial, as the generals who now rule Egypt seek to show their commitment to cracking down on abuse of power and corruption.17 inch laptop bags

The Cairo court said it had postponed Adli’s trial until May 21 for several reasons, cool laptop bags including allowing his defense lawyers more time to prepare.

Judge Adel Goma’a said the next session would also be held in a bigger courtroom to accommodate the large number of relatives of the slain protesters who showed up at this session.

Othman el-Hifnawy, a lawyer for one of the committees that charged Adli with murder, said he was seeking the death sentence for the former interior minister and his aides.

“If the defendants are not executed for the present accusations, they will be executed for using explosives against the protesters, childrens stationerychristmas stationery” Hifnawy told reporters at the courthouse.

Sony chairman credited with developing CDs dies

As a young man, aspiring opera singer Norio Ohga wrote to Sony to complain about the quality of its tape recorders.childrens stationery That move changed the course of his life, as the company promptly recruited the man whose love of music would shape the development of the compact disc and transform the Japanese electronics maker into a global software and entertainment empire.

Sony’s president and chairman from 1982 to 1995, Ohga died Saturday in Tokyo of multiple organ failure,17 inch laptop bags the company said. He was 81.

Ohga’s connection to music steered his work. The flamboyant music connoisseur insisted the CD be designed at 12 centimeters (4.cheap replica nike shoes wholesaler8 inches) in diameter to hold 75 minutes worth of music ¡ª in order to store Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in its entirety.

From the start, Ohga recognized the potential of the CD’s superior sound quality. In the 1970s, when Ohga insisted CDs would eventually replace record albums, skeptics scoffed. Herbert von Karajan, Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock spoke up in defense of Sony’s digital sound.

Sony sold the world’s first CD in 1982 and CDs overtook LP record sales in Japan five years later. The specifications are still used today and fostered the devices developed since.

“It is no exaggeration to attribute Sony’s evolution beyond audio and video products into music, movies and game, and subsequent transformation into a global entertainment leader to Ohga-san’s foresight and vision,” Sony Corp. Chairman and CEO Howard Stringer said Saturday, using the Japanese honorific.

Some decisions made during Ohga’s presidency, such as the $3.4 billion purchase of Hollywood studio Columbia Pictures, were criticized as unwise and costly at the time. But Ohga’s focus on music, films and video games as a way to enrich the electronics business helped create Sony’s success in his era.

“We are always chasing after things that other companies won’t touch,” Ohga said in a 1998 interview with The Associated Press. “That is a big secret to our success.”

Shattering the stereotype of the staid Japanese executive, the debonair Ohga was never shy, his hair neatly slicked back, his boisterous manner exuding the fiery yet naive air of an artist. His persona added a touch of glamour to Sony’s image at a time when Japan had global ambitions.

An experienced pilot, Ohga at times flew the plane himself for business trips. A gourmet, he boasted about his roast beef. His hobby was cruising on his yacht.

Joey Carbone, a Los Angeles-based composer and producer of dozens of Japanese pop songs, met Ohga in 1986 after Carbone wrote several hits for commercials for everything from cassette tapes to Honda scooters on Sony’s music label.

He remembers Ohga as an outgoing, international-minded executive who could talk about business and a wide variety of music with equal aplomb. Ohga’s office was covered with photos of himself with different artists, both Japanese and international.

“He looked like an actor. He was very outgoing, cool laptop bags” Carbone said Saturday. “He was very, how can I say it ¡ª not introverted. He was always talking, always smiling and laughing. He seemed to have a real love of life and music. He seemed to really love what he was doing.”

Chairman of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra since 1999, he continued to conduct there a few times a year. In 1993, he conducted the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall in a charity event funded by Sony.

Ohga often compared leading a company to conducting an orchestra.

“Just as a conductor must work to bring out the best in the members of his orchestra, a company president must draw on the talents of the people in his organization,” Ohga said in a 1996 Sony publication.

Sony started amid the destruction and poverty after World War II and built itself on the popularity of transistor radios, the Walkman, the Trinitron TV, the CD ¡ª shaping the history of modern electronics.christmas stationery

Ohga had graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1953 and Berlin University of the Arts in 1957. He was set to pursue a career as a baritone opera singer when Sony co-founders Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita, intrigued by his complaints about the sound quality of Sony tape recorders, recruited him to the company.

While a jury studied the evidence in Raj Rajaratnam’s trial on Tuesday, a former trader associated with his Galleon Group hedge fund became the latest to plead guilty in a sweeping government probe of insider trading on Wall Street.

Drimal pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court,GHD Precious four floors above where 12 jurors were locked in a room weighing Rajaratnam’s fate. The jury went into the courtroom early on Tuesday afternoon to listen to replays of nine government phone taps in evidence.

Drimal is the 21st out of 26 people accused to admit to charges in the biggest Wall Street insider trading case in decades.

Sri Lankan-born Rajaratnam, 53, is the only one to go on trial so far. Drimal had been scheduled to go on trial with three others on May 16. One defendant is at large.

In Rajaratnam’s trial, the jury is in its second day of reviewing evidence, including FBI phone taps and testimony by three former friends who became government witnesses.

During the seven week-long trial, defense lawyers presented evidence that Rajaratnam’s trades were guided by public information, not leaks of corporate secrets by highly placed insiders as the prosecution contends.

Jurors must be unanimous for a guilty verdict on any of the 14 counts of securities fraud and conspiracy. If convicted, Rajaratnam faces a prison sentence of up to 25 years.

Rajaratnam’s October 2009 arrest was part of an investigation that prosecutors described as the biggest probe of insider trading at hedge funds on record.

He and other suspects, including Drimal had been subjected to court-approved FBI phone taps — tactics traditionally used in probes of organized crime families, political corruption and drug trafficking, not white-collar cases.

Rajaratnam, Drimal and other defendants failed in their bids before separate judges to have wiretap evidence excluded on privacy and other grounds.

Drimal, 54, told U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan that he traded in shares of computer network equipment maker 3Com Corp and Canadian drug company Axcan Pharma Inc, based on tips from lawyers working on merger transactions.

“At the time I did these trades,” Drimal said, “I believed my conduct was illegal and wrong, and I deeply regret these actions that have caused such pain for my family and friends.”

Drimal is free on bail until sentencing on September 9. The government has suggested a prison term of between five years and 10 months, and seven years and three months.

There’s something fishy in publicized price hike plans

April 27th, 2011 by jerseys012

There’s something fishy in publicized price hike plans

EUROPEAN Union regulators recently fined Procter & Gamble and Unilever a total of US$456 million for fixing laundry detergent prices in eight EU countries.

The EU action last Wednesday reminds me of these two companies’ recently announced intentions to raise prices on a range of household items such as shampoo, bath lotion,,Nike shox shoes, toothpaste, and detergent.

The extent of the price increases – as much as 15 percent in some cases – and the seemingly coordinated nature of the announcement have stoked a public outcry.

Granted, after rounds of quantitative easing in the United States and now in Japan and the subsequent run-up of commodity prices around the world, the inflation beast has clearly climbed ashore. The consumer price index has been hovering close to 5 percent in recent months.

Oil prices, in particular, are again in the three-digit territory. As oil byproducts, some of the raw materials used in shampoo and lotion have seen price increases as high as 50 percent.

So there seems to be a legitimate reason for these companies to transfer higher costs to consumers.

However, the public is crying that the announced price increases seem to be more than enough to cover material cost increases.

If you look at the cost breakdown of a P&G shampoo for example, only 15-30 percent is attributed to manufacturing costs, of which maybe half of it is for raw material. The bulk of the other cost items are for advertising and sales in the distribution channel.

The consumer product industry is famous for its large advertising budget, probably only behind the auto industry. Therefore, it seems that an outrageous 15 percent price hike is more than it needs.

Market power

If that is the case,When some people think of plastic hangers, they do sometime think about wire hangers that are made out of metal too. It is true that they are Fashion boots made out of metal, but they are not the metal hangers that we are talking about. it then leads to the other more important issue that the public is concerned about – the excessive market power of consumer product behemoths P&G and Unilever.

The public’s concern is highly justified, as this industry indeed sees a high market concentration. Let’s do a quick back-of-the-envelope antitrust analysis here.

Take shampoo as an example. I think no antitrust expert is going to dispute me on the product definition of shampoo as just shampoo.

The geographic dimension of the relevant market definition should be the national market, since the transport cost of shampoo is relatively low.The last time she went somewhere I handed her one of my normal cute laptop bags to carry the netbook in and she handed it back and said it wasn’t cute enough.

OK, let’s look at the national market of shampoo. The two giants, P&G and Unilever, with a myriad of brands under them, each occupies about 30 percent of market share, according to the market research company Asia PHPC.

That alone translates into 1800 points of the Herfindahl index, which is the most common index used for measuring market concentration. La Martina T-shirt When adding other companies, my guess is that the Herfindahl index for the shampoo market could be north of 2000.

In the US, a merger request that generates above 2000 in the Herfindahl index would raise grave concerns at the US Federal Trade Commission or the Justice Department, whichever is assigned to evaluate such request.

Based on China’s Antimonopoly Law, such a high industry concentration would constitute the market power position, and would also serve as the basis for inquiries into any abuse of such power. And the coordinated nature of these price announcements, in my opinion, seems to be suspect behavior called tacit collusion among an informal cartel of oligopolistic companies.

In fact, the very public announcement of price increase intentions may well serve as a market signal to its rivals that would eventually result in a rough and unspoken coordination of price increases.

Tricky behavior

The result can thus approximate the consequences of traditional price-fixing in a smoke-filled board room, even though each company does nothing but makes its own independent decision by observing what the other companies do in the marketplace or say in the media.
